David Almendral Nieto

D. Almendral holds a degree in Biology, specialising in Clinical and Health Biology from the University of Alcalá de Henares (Spain). His research activity began with an internship at the Center for Biological Research (CIB-CSIC). Specifically, in the Department of Environmental Biology, in the research group «Plant-virus-vector molecular interactions», directed by Dr. Francisco Tenllado. D. Almendral focused on studying the biosynthesis and perception routes of oxylipins in processes of programmed cell death associated with viral infection in plants. Subsequently, he joined the research group «Biotechnology for Lignocellulosic Biomass», directed by Prof. Ángel Tomas Martínez, in the Center for Biological Research (CIB-CSIC), focusing his research on the heterologous expression, purification, biochemical characterisation and targeted mutagenesis of several haemoperoxidases. Subsequently, he joined the CNB-CSIC (National Center of Biotechnology), in the Department of Macromolecule Structure, in the cell-cell and virus-cell interactions group with Dr. José María Casasnovas. His contract was within the framework of the project «Design and evaluation of immunoglobulins as therapeutic molecules for viral infections (measles and HIV). During this period, he gained experience in molecular biology, microbiology and biochemistry. In recent years he joined the group of Prof. Manuel Ferrer at the Institute of Catalysis, CSIC, working in purification, characterization and engineering of enzymes, in the frame of a number of national projects and private contracts with national and international companies.
